Introduction

Judge Lee G Muthoga was born in 1945 under a Mugumo tree, in the rural village of Munyange in Central Kenya. Perhaps his birth under this tree was a prophecy of the resilience he would face life with and the magnitude of his contributions

Education Level

With a Bachelor's Degree in law from the University of East Africa in Dar Es Salaam, Judge Muthoga practised law for 32 years. He served as the Chairman of the Law Society of Kenya (1981-1983) and President of the African Bar Association (1981-1987).

Professional Level

In 1986, he was appointed a Commissioner of Assize, serving in that capacity for ten years. In 2003, President Mwai Kibaki conferred Judge Muthoga with the rank and dignity of Senior Counsel, and in 2006, he was named to the Roll of Honour of the Law Society of Kenya.

Global Level

Between 2003 and 2012, Judge Muthoga served as an ad litem Judge of the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UN-ICTR). In 2012, he was elected as a Judge of the United Nations Residual Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (UN-MICT), where he still serves while administering community justice.

Achievements

Judge Muthoga is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICPSK), now the Institute of Certified Secretaries (ICS). Judge Muthoga is involved in mediation and training mediators as the Chairman of Dispute & Conflict Resolution International (DCRI).

Residency

Currently residing in Nairobi, Kenya, Judge Muthoga enjoys spending time with his daughters, telling tales to his grandchildren, tending his avocado and tea farms, supporting community-centred philanthropic initiatives and , inspiring peoeple to overcome adversity and make a lasting impact, both in their personal lives and on the global stage..
